How to Identify Your Fire TV Stick Model and OS

Find the exact Amazon Fire TV device name, generation, and operating system before choosing an IPTV player or setup guide.

Reviewed November 6, 2026

The retail name alone is not enough. A newer Fire TV Stick can use a different operating system from an older device with a similar name.

Quick answer

Open Settings, then look for My Fire TV or Device & Software, followed by About. Record the device name, software version, and available storage. Compare the name with Amazon’s official Fire TV device specifications.

What to record

Write down these four details before installing a player:

  1. Full device name, including 4K, Max, Select, HD, Lite, or Cube.
  2. Generation or release year when shown.
  3. Fire OS or Vega OS version.
  4. Available storage and current network connection.

The remote design, packaging colour, or the word Firestick does not identify the operating system reliably.

Why the operating system matters

Amazon’s current device documentation lists both Fire OS and Vega OS devices. Fire OS is based on Android. Vega OS devices use a separate platform and depend on apps made available for that platform.

Confirm app compatibility

Open the app detail page in the Amazon Appstore and check the Works With section for the exact device. An app available on one Fire TV model is not automatically available on every Fire TV model.

Next step

Once the model and OS are confirmed, choose the matching setup guide. If an installed app is already buffering or missing guide data, go to the troubleshooting hub.
